Few people remember the COVID-19 pandemic fondly, but one unexpected outcome was the surge in interest in outdoor recreation. Activities such as camping, overlanding, and off-roading attracted a huge number of newcomers during lockdowns and travel restrictions. Although off-road travel had already been growing in popularity throughout the previous decade, the pandemic accelerated the trend dramatically.

Vehicle manufacturers quickly recognized this shift in consumer demand. Since 2020, the market has seen an influx of capable adventure-focused SUVs, along with dedicated off-road sub-brands such as Subaru’s Wilderness series.

As enthusiasm for rugged utility vehicles continues to grow, we are introducing our first-ever Best Adventure Vehicles Awards. These awards highlight the most capable and impressive SUVs and trucks currently available for outdoor exploration. In addition to evaluating trail performance, we also considered road-trip comfort and camping practicality to help buyers find the ideal adventure companion.

How We Evaluated These Off-Road SUVs

Every vehicle on this list has been tested both on paved roads and challenging terrain. Our rankings combine real-world driving impressions with objective measurements.

We analyzed each model’s off-road dimensions, including ground clearance, approach angle, departure angle, and breakover angle. We also examined available off-road equipment such as skid plates, locking differentials, rock rails, low-range transfer cases, and specialized all-terrain or mud-terrain tires.

Many SUVs offer multiple trims ranging from everyday family transportation to serious trail machines. For our evaluation, we focused on the most capable off-road versions available. In some cases, a specific trim earned recognition, while in others, an entire model lineup consistently performed well enough to receive an award.

Best Subcompact Off-Road SUV

2026 Ford Bronco Sport Sasquatch

Introduced for the 2021 model year, the Ford Bronco Sport is the smallest SUV in Ford’s lineup. Despite its compact dimensions, it delivers impressive capability when equipped with the right package.

Even entry-level versions powered by the 180-horsepower three-cylinder engine feature all-wheel drive and nearly eight inches of ground clearance. Buyers who choose the Badlands trim receive additional clearance, a more powerful 250-horsepower turbocharged engine, and suspension upgrades designed for tougher terrain.

The Sasquatch package takes capability even further. Built upon the Badlands trim, it adds Ford’s HOSS 3.0 suspension system, increasing ground clearance to 8.8 inches. Additional upgrades include all-terrain tires, Bilstein rear dampers, enhanced cooling systems, an electronic locking rear differential, heavy-duty rear bumper protection, tow hooks, and wider fender flares.

Competitors such as the Jeep Compass Trailhawk and Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness performed well, but the Bronco Sport Sasquatch ultimately stood out thanks to its superior power and overall off-road package.

Best Compact Off-Road SUV

2026 Jeep Wrangler

The compact SUV segment now includes many rugged contenders, but when maximum trail capability is the goal, the Jeep Wrangler remains the benchmark.

Owning a Wrangler requires accepting some compromises. It is noisier, less refined, and less fuel-efficient than most modern crossovers. However, no rival in this segment can match its off-road credentials.

The Wrangler range is incredibly diverse, spanning everything from basic two-door models with manual transmissions to high-performance V8-powered desert runners. Even the most affordable versions feature low-range gearing and nearly ten inches of ground clearance.

Moving up to the Rubicon trim adds serious trail equipment such as disconnecting sway bars and specialized off-road tires. At the top sits the Moab 392, powered by a V8 engine and riding on massive 35-inch tires.

One of the Wrangler’s most distinctive features is its removable roof and doors, allowing drivers to experience the outdoors in a way few vehicles can match.

Best Midsize Off-Road SUV

Ford Bronco

The larger Ford Bronco returned in 2021 after being absent for more than two decades. Unlike the Bronco Sport, this model is a traditional body-on-frame SUV developed with serious off-roading in mind.

Its platform shares some engineering with the Ford Ranger pickup, while its styling pays tribute to the original Bronco models of the 1960s.

The Bronco combines modern comfort and technology with outstanding off-road performance. Aside from modest fuel economy and somewhat limited rear-seat space, owners sacrifice very little for its capability.

Numerous versions are available, including two-door and four-door configurations, manual and automatic transmissions, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, V6 options, and the range-topping Bronco Raptor.

Every Bronco offers substantial ground clearance, low-range gearing, and trail-ready equipment. Higher trims such as the Badlands and Bill Stroppe Edition include 33- or 35-inch tires, upgraded suspension systems, and additional drive modes.

The Bronco Raptor sits at the extreme end of the lineup, delivering a level of performance that very few SUVs can rival.

Best Hybrid SUV for Off-Roading

2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland

Hybrid vehicles are typically designed with efficiency in mind rather than trail capability. However, combining strong fuel economy with off-road readiness is an increasingly attractive formula.

The completely redesigned 2026 Toyota RAV4 now comes exclusively with hybrid powertrains, including the adventure-oriented Woodland Edition.

During recent off-road testing, the Woodland demonstrated impressive capability both on pavement and on challenging trails.

Standard RAV4 models offer 8.1 inches of ground clearance and optional all-wheel drive. The Woodland version increases clearance to 8.5 inches while adding all-terrain tires and standard all-wheel drive.

The tires make a significant difference in off-road situations. While the Subaru Forester Hybrid offers an excellent all-wheel-drive system, it currently lacks all-terrain tire availability until the next Wilderness variant arrives.

The RAV4 Woodland also benefits from strong fuel economy and generous interior space for passengers and cargo.

Best Luxury Off-Road SUV

Land Rover Defender

Luxury SUVs are often marketed as adventure vehicles, though many spend their lives exclusively on pavement. Large wheels, low-profile tires, and extended bodywork can limit real off-road ability.

The Land Rover Defender breaks that pattern.

Although it is not the most luxurious vehicle in Land Rover’s lineup, it remains one of the most capable premium off-road SUVs available.

At the top of the range sits the Defender Octa, featuring a 626-horsepower V8 engine, 33-inch tires, and extensive trail-focused upgrades. Other versions, including the 90 V8, 110 X, and 130 Outbound, also scored exceptionally well during evaluation.

Competitors such as the Ineos Grenadier and Lexus GX came close, but the Defender’s extensive range of configurations gave it an advantage.

Buyers can choose from two-door, four-door, and extended three-row body styles. While the interior emphasizes durability and practicality, it still delivers the comfort, technology, and style expected from a luxury vehicle.

Best Electric Off-Road SUV

2026 Rivian R1S

Since arriving in 2022, the Rivian R1S has established itself as one of the most capable electric SUVs on the market.

Many electric SUVs focus primarily on road performance and driving range, but the R1S was designed with off-road adventures in mind.

Its adjustable air suspension provides up to 14.9 inches of ground clearance. It can also ford nearly 43 inches of water, exceeding the capabilities of many traditional off-road vehicles.

Rivian has continued refining the R1S with updated battery options and an incredibly powerful quad-motor variant producing over 1,000 horsepower.

Although many owners appreciate its acceleration and premium feel on public roads, its off-road abilities remain exceptional. During testing on California’s rugged Donner Pass trails, the R1S demonstrated remarkable rock-crawling capability, excellent suspension articulation, and impressive traction across difficult terrain.

Best Large Off-Road SUV

2026 Nissan Armada PRO-4X

The Nissan Armada received a complete redesign for 2025 and has become the brand’s most capable SUV.

Its roots trace back to the globally respected Nissan Patrol, a vehicle known for operating in some of the world’s toughest environments, from desert oil fields to humanitarian missions.

The newest Armada replaces its previous V8 engine with a more efficient twin-turbocharged V6 producing 425 horsepower. Despite the change, it retains the body-on-frame toughness that has defined the model while improving refinement and fuel efficiency.

Among the available trims, the PRO-4X stands out as the most trail-focused. It includes an air suspension system, front skid plate, electronic locking rear differential, and all-terrain tires.

Optional smaller wheels paired with larger sidewall tires further enhance its off-road capability.

The Armada outperformed competitors such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition during our testing. It combines impressive trail performance with enough interior space to comfortably accommodate an entire family on extended adventures.

Final Thoughts

From compact crossovers to full-size family haulers and cutting-edge electric SUVs, today’s off-road market offers more capable choices than ever before.

Whether your goal is exploring remote trails, embarking on multi-day overlanding trips, reaching distant campsites, or simply owning a vehicle ready for any adventure, these award-winning SUVs represent the strongest options available for 2026.

How Robotic Space Probes Unravel Deep Space Mysteries

Uncrewed robotic vehicles known as space probes travel across outer space to collect crucial scientific information. These automated machines send detailed scientific measurements back to researchers on Earth. Scientists rely on these craft to examine the Moon, distant planets, natural satellites, comets, asteroids, and the Sun. Many probes even journey far beyond into interstellar space. Standard artificial satellites typically remain trapped in Earth orbit. Space probes differ because engineers launch them toward distant cosmic targets across deep space.
